Luna Moth (Actias luna)

One of North America's most recognizable giant silk moths, the luna moth is known for its pale green wings and elegant, ribbon-like tails. These beautiful moths are found throughout the eastern United States and parts of Canada, where they spend their nights quietly flying through deciduous forests.
Although they appear delicate, Luna Moths undergo one of nature's most remarkable transformations. After hatching from tiny eggs, the caterpillars spend several weeks feeding on the leaves of trees such as hickory, walnut, birch, and sweetgum before spinning a silky cocoon among fallen leaves. Inside the cocoon, they transform into the graceful moth we recognize.
Adult Luna Moths live for only about one week. They emerge with a single purpose—to find a mate and reproduce. Because they no longer have functioning mouthparts, they cannot eat during their brief adult lives and rely entirely on the energy they stored as caterpillars.
Their long, graceful tails aren't just beautiful—they may help protect them from predators. Research suggests the tails can confuse hunting bats by deflecting echolocation attacks away from the moth's body, giving the Luna Moth a better chance of escaping.


​Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia)

The cecropia moth is the largest native moth in North America. It's impressive wingspan that can reach up to seven inches. Its velvety brown wings are adorned with crescent-shaped white markings, red accents, and delicate bands of cream and black, making it one of the continent's most recognizable and beautiful moths. Despite its size, this gentle giant is completely harmless and spends much of its short adult life quietly resting among the trees.
Like all giant silk moths, the adult cecropia moth does not have functioning mouthparts and cannot eat. It lives for about one to two weeks, relying entirely on the energy it stored as a caterpillar. During this brief time, its sole purpose is to find a mate and begin the next generation. The female releases a chemical scent to attract males, who can detect it from remarkable distances using their feathery antennae.
The caterpillars are just as fascinating as the adults. They begin life as tiny black larvae but grow into large, bright green caterpillars covered with colorful blue, yellow, and orange knobs. They feed on the leaves of many trees, including maple, birch, cherry, willow, and apple, before spinning a tough, brown silk cocoon. Inside the cocoon, they transform through the winter, emerging as magnificent moths the following spring or early summer.


​Io Moth (Automeris io)

The io moth is one of North America's most eye-catching silk moths, famous for the striking eyespots that decorate its hindwings. When resting, these colorful "eyes" are hidden beneath the forewings, but if the moth is startled, it suddenly flashes them open to startle predators. Males are typically a vibrant golden yellow with dramatic blue, black, and pink eyespots, while females are usually larger and display beautiful shades of rich reddish-brown. Together, they are among the most distinctive and fascinating moths found in forests, meadows, and suburban gardens throughout much of the eastern United States.
Like other giant silk moths, the adult io moth lives only a short time and does not eat because it lacks functioning mouthparts. Its brief lifespan—usually just one to two weeks—is devoted entirely to reproduction. Females release pheromones to attract males, whose large, feathery antennae are so sensitive they can detect the scent from remarkable distances.
The caterpillar of the io moth is just as remarkable as the adult, though it is best admired from a distance. Bright green with colorful stripes and clusters of branching spines, the caterpillar is well camouflaged among leaves. Those spines are connected to venom glands and can deliver a painful sting if touched. This is an effective defense against predators. Io caterpillars feed on a wide variety of trees and shrubs, including oak, maple, willow, elm, cherry, and blackberry, before spinning a silken cocoon where they transform into adults.


​Cinnabar Moth (Tyria jacobaeae)

The cinnabar moth is a striking day-flying moth that is instantly recognizable by its charcoal-gray wings marked with vivid red patches. Unlike many moths that are active only after dark, the cinnabar moth can often be seen fluttering through sunny meadows and grasslands during the day. Its bold coloration serves as a warning to predators that the moth contains toxic compounds, making them an excellent example of nature's use of warning colors to discourage would-be attackers.
The adult cinnabar moth has a relatively short lifespan and spends much of its time searching for a mate and laying eggs. Females typically deposit their eggs on ragwort plants, which provide the perfect food source for the developing caterpillars. The adults feed on flower nectar, helping to pollinate a variety of wildflowers as they move from bloom to bloom.
The caterpillars are just as eye-catching as the adults, with bright yellow and black stripes that make them easy to spot. These colorful larvae feed almost exclusively on common ragwort, a plant that contains toxic alkaloids. Rather than being harmed by these chemicals, the caterpillars store them in their bodies, making both the caterpillars and the adult moths distasteful to predators. Their ability to tolerate and even benefit from these toxins is a remarkable example of adaptation in the natural world.


​Great Tiger Moth (Arctia caja)

The great tiger moth is admired for its bold colors and remarkable defense displays. At first glance, its forewings appear beautifully camouflaged with intricate patterns of brown, cream, and white that resemble lichen or tree bark. When threatened, however, the moth suddenly reveals its brilliant orange hindwings decorated with striking blue-black spots. This dramatic flash of color can startle predators just long enough for the moth to escape.
Unlike many moths that remain hidden throughout the day, the great tiger moth may be active during both day and night, especially when disturbed from its resting place. Adult moths feed on the nectar of flowering plants, helping to pollinate a variety of wildflowers while searching for mates. 
The caterpillar is just as distinctive as the adult. Covered in long black and reddish-brown hairs, these caterpillars feed on a wide range of plants, including dandelion, nettle, dock, plantain, bramble, and many other wildflowers and shrubs. If threatened, they curl into a tight ball, using their dense coat of hairs as protection against predators. After completing their growth, they spin a silken cocoon mixed with their own hairs before transforming into the striking adult moth.


Chickweed Geometer Moth (Haematopis grataria)

The chickweed geometer is a delicate and beautifully patterned moth found throughout much of eastern North America. Although it is smaller than many of the giant silk moths, its bright yellow wings, accented with rosy-pink to reddish bands and fine white markings, make it one of the most recognizable members of the geometer family. Active primarily from late spring through summer, this little moth is often seen resting among grasses and wildflowers or quietly visiting gardens and woodland edges after dusk.
Like many geometer moths, the adult chickweed geometer feeds on flower nectar, using its long proboscis to sip from a variety of blossoms. These moths are nocturnal and are attracted to lights at night, though they spend the daylight hours resting among vegetation where their colorful wings help them blend surprisingly well with flowers and sunlit foliage. 
The caterpillars are slender, green "inchworms," named for the looping way they move. Because they lack several pairs of middle legs, they arch their bodies into a loop before stretching forward, creating the distinctive inching motion shared by all geometer caterpillars. Chickweed geometer larvae feed on a variety of low-growing plants, including chickweed and other herbaceous vegetation, playing an important role in the food web while helping to recycle plant material.
​Although the chickweed geometer is considered relatively common across much of its range, it depends on healthy meadows, woodland edges, and native plant communities to thrive. While it may be easy to overlook because of its size, the chickweed geometer is a wonderful reminder that some of nature's most beautiful creations come in the smallest packages.


​Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus)

The polyphemus moth is one of North America's largest and most captivating silk moths. With a wingspan that can exceed six inches, this gentle giant is best known for the large, transparent eyespots on its hindwings. Named after Polyphemus, the one-eyed giant from Greek mythology, these striking markings serve an important purpose. When threatened, the moth suddenly reveals its hidden eyespots, startling birds and other predators long enough to make a quick escape. Its soft tan wings, accented with shades of cream, brown, and pink, provide excellent camouflage among dried leaves and tree bark when the moth is at rest.
Like other giant silk moths, the adult polyphemus moth has a remarkably short lifespan. It emerges from its cocoon without functioning mouthparts and cannot eat, relying entirely on the energy it stored as a caterpillar. Adults live for only about a week, dedicating their brief lives to finding a mate and reproducing. Female moths release pheromones that males can detect from astonishing distances using their large, feathery antennae. This allows them to locate a mate even in complete darkness.
​The caterpillars are bright green with yellow markings and tiny orange or silver bumps along their bodies, making them as beautiful as the adults. They feed on the leaves of many deciduous trees, including oak, maple, birch, willow, apple, cherry, and beech. After several weeks of feeding and growing, the caterpillar spins a strong silken cocoon, often wrapped inside a leaf. Depending on the climate, the moth may emerge later that season or remain safely inside the cocoon until the following spring.


​Primrose Moth (Schinia florida)

The primrose moth is a small but brilliantly colored moth that brightens summer meadows with its striking pink, yellow, and white wings. Unlike many moths that are active only after dark, the primrose moth flies primarily during the day. Its vibrant colors help it blend among the blossoms of its favorite plants, where it spends much of its time feeding and reproducing. Though modest in size, the primrose moth is considered one of North America's most beautiful flower moths.
Adult primrose moths have a close relationship with plants in the evening primrose family. They visit flowers to feed on nectar while also searching for suitable places to lay their eggs. Females carefully deposit their eggs on the flower buds of evening primrose and related plants, ensuring that their caterpillars will have a ready food source as soon as they hatch. This close partnership between the moth and its host plants highlights the important role insects play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
The caterpillars feed almost exclusively on the developing flowers and seed capsules of evening primrose plants. Their coloration helps them remain well hidden among the blossoms, providing protection from birds and other predators. As they mature, the caterpillars eventually leave the plant to pupate in the soil, where they undergo their remarkable transformation before emerging as colorful adults the following season.


​Scarlet-winged Lichen Moth (Hypoprepia miniata)

The scarlet-winged lichen moth is a small but unmistakable jewel of North American forests. Its vivid coral-red forewings, bordered with dark gray, make it one of the most colorful moths found in woodland habitats. Although only about an inch across, this striking moth stands out against the muted tones of tree bark and moss, where it often rests during the day. It is most active at night but is occasionally seen during daylight hours, especially if disturbed from its hiding place.
Unlike many moths that rely on camouflage alone, the scarlet-winged lichen moth's bold colors may serve as a warning to predators. While scientists continue to study this behavior, its bright coloration is thought to signal that it may be unpalatable, much like other brightly colored insects. Adult moths visit flowers to feed on nectar and are important nighttime pollinators, quietly moving from blossom to blossom under the cover of darkness.
The caterpillars are quite different in appearance from the adults. Covered in soft gray hairs, they feed primarily on lichens growing on tree trunks, rocks, and fallen branches. Lichens are remarkable organisms formed through a partnership between fungi and algae, creating miniature ecosystems that support a surprising variety of wildlife. By feeding on these lichens, scarlet-winged lichen moth caterpillars occupy a unique ecological niche that few other moths share.


​Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo)

The virgin tiger moth, a beautiful member of the tiger moth family, is admired for its striking contrast of colors and intricate wing patterns. Its forewings are creamy white to pale yellow with bold black markings, while its hidden hindwings reveal brilliant shades of orange to pink accented by dark spots. When resting, the moth blends surprisingly well into its surroundings but, if disturbed, it flashes its colorful hindwings in a display that can startle predators. Found primarily along the western coast of North America, the virgin tiger moth inhabits coastal grasslands, meadows, and open woodlands where native wildflowers flourish.
Adult virgin tiger moths are active during both the day and evening, feeding on the nectar of flowering plants while helping to pollinate a variety of native wildflowers. Their fuzzy bodies and vibrant colors make them a favorite among naturalists and photographers alike. Like many tiger moths, their bright hindwings may also serve as a warning to predators that they are not an easy meal, adding another layer of protection beyond their camouflage.
The caterpillar is covered in dense black and rusty-orange hairs that help protect it from predators. These caterpillars feed on a wide range of herbaceous plants and grasses, making them adaptable to many different habitats. After completing their growth, they spin a loose silken cocoon woven with their own hairs before transforming into the beautifully patterned adult moth.


​Rosy Maple Moth (Dryocampa rubicunda)

The rosy maple moth is one of North America's most enchanting insects, instantly recognizable by its soft pink and buttery yellow wings. Despite its vibrant appearance, the rosy maple moth blends surprisingly well among maple leaves and flowers, where its pastel colors provide gentle camouflage. It can be found throughout eastern North America in forests, parks, and neighborhoods wherever maple trees are abundant.
Like all members of the giant silk moth family, the adult rosy maple moth has a brief life and does not eat. After emerging from its cocoon, it relies entirely on the energy stored during its caterpillar stage. Adults live for only about a week, dedicating that time to finding a mate and laying eggs. 
​The caterpillars are very different in appearance from the delicate adults. Bright green with narrow white or yellow stripes and a pair of distinctive black horns near the head, they feed primarily on the leaves of maple trees, though they may also be found on oak and other hardwoods. While large numbers of caterpillars can occasionally defoliate small branches, healthy trees typically recover quickly and continue to thrive. After completing their growth, the caterpillars burrow into the soil, where they pupate and spend the winter before emerging as adults the following summer.
